Organizational Goddess…yeah, right!!!

001 after

I am an organizational goddess….under a full moon, in my dreams, in an alternate universe.

My fantasy is for everything to have a place and to have a place for everything. No clutter on counter tops. No junk draws. No pile of magazines. Etc. Etc. Etc!

I may not be living this fantasy, but I am working hard to declutter and organize one corner at a time.

This week I focused on four bathroom draws that were in dire need. I am shocked and embarrassed by how many expired medications we had in there! There was also a ton of junk and things that belonged in other places.

Lots of stuff was thrown out, other items were moved to their proper location.

Success!!! I have de-cluttered and now need to go buy some draw organizers to corral the rest of the stuff.

Here are the before and after photos (some look better than others, but trust me…this is a huge improvement!):

Daily Prompt: The Full Moon

We Can See the Floor!!!

corner 2 before

My husband announced last night with glee that we can finally see the floor in our study!

This is the first time this is true since we moved in…and I am not admitting to how long ago that was. I am so excited that we are going to get to use this room soon as it has basically been a storage facility!

Last week I decluttered the first corner and now the second corner is complete!

corner 2 after

I wish I had taken a before picture that showed the mess behind the red chair, but sadly I didn’t. There was a mess back there! Now I still have a bunch of pictures, frames and mirrors that will be hung in the Fall when we fully decorate this room (and others), but other than that it is cleared out!

Two more corners – two more weeks – and the room will be done decluttering! Yippie!!!

To manage this project I collected about one bag of garbage and one bag of items to be donated. Everything else found its proper home somewhere else!

I am so excited!  What tricks do you have for decluttering?

Analysis Paralysis – Stop the Whirling and Make a Damn Decision!

Whirling Analysis Paralysis

I didn’t even know analysis paralysis existed, never mind that I suffered from it!

Analysis paralysis is when you over think something so much that a decision or action is never taken.

It shows up time to time in my personal life, but is most evident when it comes to decorating. My husband brought it to my attention recently and I have started to take it to heart.

We own two apartments, neither are decorated, and he would like to finally make our homes feel like a home.  I don’t blame him and I am taking his advice to heart.

I have a fear that that I will pick an ugly paint color, hang a picture in the wrong place, select an uncomfortable couch, so what do I do? Nothing!

One of our apartments was actually destroyed by an upstairs neighbor’s pipe bursting. I am going to be forced to rebuild soon and will need to make one decision after another.

I am terrified, but now that I am aware of my analysis paralysis I have a plan:

1- All decisions must be made within 72 hours of being presented.

2- Ask for help, but not from too many people…maybe three trusted advisors (one possibly being a professional).

3- Limit my time to 3 hours Googling information – I can get lost in Google and other resources.

4- Immediately make pro / cons sheets – these always seem to work for me.

My hope is that I will spend the summer rebuilding and decorating our vacation apartment and then focus on our main apartment in the fall. In the meantime I am in the process of organizing and decluttering our main home in anticipation of this project.

Very exciting, but very scary and overwhelming!

What tools do you use to make decisions?

I would also love referrals to any decorating resources you love.

Daily Prompt: Powerful Suggestion

Declutter: One Corner at a Time

corner 1 before

I swear I am a minimalist stuck in a hoarder’s life!

Okay, well maybe I do have an itsy, bitsy problem with getting rid of stuff and staying organized in a small physical space….but in my defense, we do live in a small space without a lot of storage space.

And, I do hate to part with stuff.

That being said, we have an office that from the very beginning was used as a storage area, but now has basically become a dumping ground.

No more! I can’t take it anymore! Also, I wanted to buy this adult coloring book and my husband said no more stuff is coming into this home until we have a place for it….so thus the Declutter: One Corner at a Time idea was born.

The thought of organizing that whole room at once was way too overwhelming, so I decided to break it up into 4 sections, i.e. the four corners. Continue reading

Weekly Challenge: Improving Something

small steps 4.12.15

I am going to set a new challenge for myself every Monday to improve something in my life.  Some challenges will be easier than others. I am going to try to make each a manageable and achievable task.

Last week I set the challenge of drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day…and I am proud to say that so far I have stuck to it.

Most challenges will probably last more than a week, such as drinking enough water daily.  Others may be quicker hits like cleaning out a closet.

I am going to spend sometime today trying to figure out what my next few challenges will be.  I am going to start by focusing on challenges that will make me healthier, more organized, learn something new, and help improve and/or expand my social relationships.

I am open to suggestions.  Please let me know your thoughts.
